From self-awareness to AI chatbots. Exploring new possibilities for personalized AI interventions in mental health
Abstract
Self-awareness, self-efficacy, and self-identity in adolescents and young adults have been shown to be significant factors influencing an individual's ability to achieve goals, with important implications for mental health. This work presents three studies as a cross-section of the author's research, progressively developing the idea that these psychological constructs may be critical in fostering psychological well-being.
The first study examines how goal self-efficacy serves as a potential predictor of goal attainment and personal well-being. It was the first study to introduce the intention of investigating how different aspects of the Self influence the process and effectiveness of goal attainment. Building on this, the second study focuses on the concepts of self-awareness and self-identity. The results demonstrate that the ability to reflect on one's emotions, thoughts, and values, as well as the perception of one's identity, can enhance goal achievement. These findings provide a foundation for further research in this area.
The third study, the author's current focus, explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can support these psychological mechanisms, specifically self-awareness, and how enhancing self-awareness in this way affects the achievement of health-related goals, including mental health goals. The objective of this ongoing research project is to develop an AI chatbot designed to provide personalized interventions that empower individuals' self-awareness in self-regulation, ultimately contributing to improved mental health. The implementation of this research opens the door to innovative approaches in mental health care.
