Exploring the complex interplay between epileptic seizures and criminal behavior: A systematic review
Abstract
This study systematically investigates the intricate relationship between epilepsy and aggressive behavior, with a secondary focus on criminal liability in individuals with epilepsy. Utilizing databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Scielo, we examined literature spanning 2000 to 2022 to assess whether epilepsy correlates with increased aggression and the legal considerations involved. Despite public misconceptions linking epilepsy to heightened aggression, our findings indicate no substantial increase in aggressive behavior among individuals with epilepsy. However, specific patterns emerged: aggression was more common in males with comorbid psychiatric disorders or substance use, and in offenders, seizures often originated in temporal or frontal brain regions. These findings highlight the necessity for further investigation into epilepsy's impact on criminal behavior and underscore the importance of nuanced forensic assessments to inform legal judgments. Understanding these dynamics could refine judicial processes, particularly in evaluating criminal liability in epilepsy cases.
